Croquet is a great outdoor game with a long history. Croquet can be a great outdoor summer game to share with the whole family. There are different croquet sets to choose from, so here are some things you should know about the different types of sets.
Croquet Association Sets
The Association Croquet Set is for the serious competitor. These advanced croquet sets are available in either 4 or 6 player croquet sets. It contains competition mallets that weigh approximately 3 pounds and are 36 inches in length. The balls are made from molded plastic that are virtually unbreakable and meet the regulation specifications for size, weight, and rebound. The hoops measure one-half inch and are coated with powder to prevent rusting. Association Sets include (depending on whether you choose 4 or 6 players):
- 6 iron hoops
- 4 or 6 composite balls
1 hoop mallet
- 4 corner pegs
- 4 or 6 metal clips

Hurlingham Croquet Sets
The only difference between these sets and Association Sets are the mallets. Hurlingham sets include mallets with cylindrical brass bound heads. They are the same length as Association mallets but weigh in at a little under 3 pounds.

Garden Sets
Garden croquet sets contain regulation size balls and hoops; however, the mallets weight a little less, without the brass heads of the Hurlingham sets, and are susceptible to warping and damage from off center shots. |
Signature Sets
Serious croquet players (with a little extra money to burn) might consider purchasing custom-made croquet sets. You can choose from a variety of wood materials including mahogany and oak. The mallets can also be designed with brass heads and inlays. You also have your choice of suede grips, and you can even have your own personal logo attached to it, or have your initials engraved in gold on the mallet heads.
