For the first Family Day of Croquet in Peterboro, NY which is an annual event held the third Sunday in July, we needed to purchase sets for use by the public. We purchased several Eddie Bauer croquet sets because they were affordable and the mallets looked similar to the ones that professionals use today and those that Gerrit Smith may have used on his estate in the 1800s. The sets were great! While they are too light and short for professionals, they were perfect starter sets for people who want to play and look good doing it! They were in stock and arrived in time for the event three days later. We will definately buy more of these sets next year.

I bought this as a gift for my dad since our old set (which lasted us 15 years) was wearing out. On my dad's second swing, the mallet handle shattered and went flying. He was left holding 4 inches of handle. After the game, all the balls looked like they'd been through a lawn mower mutliple times.

This might be a good set for gentle players (small kids, older people on a small course). I have 3 college aged brothers, and this set is definitely not sturdy enough to handle our type of play. My family has a larger wooded yard, so we set up larger advanced courses that span more distance than a typical course. This set cannot handle anything other than a very small, rectangle, boring course. I think you probaly also need to swing the mallet between your legs like a grandma as well, which we all know is extremely boring. If the wickets are placed further apart like we do to increase difficulty and add fun, your mallets will break and the balls will be ruined quickly.

We made an effort to take care of this set, but it didn't survive one game. Our other set lasted us 15 years. Guess they don't make em like they used to.

        This set is probably the worst quality of anything I have ever seen. And I'm not just talking Croquet. We managed to break 4 of the six mallets in one afternoon!!! The wood is of the cheapest quality imaginable and they simply break off where the handle attaches. Even our 9 year old managed to break one. [...] I guess you get what you pay for.

        We have been playing croquet for about a year now and some mallets have been broken. In almost every case I can think of the reason they broke was because they were not being used correctly. I decided to get some replacement mallets since we only had 4 left. Although I saw some negative comments about this set, I decided to purchase it anyway since the mallets looked well built. I am glad I did. I have had no problems with these new mallets at all and now we have plently of mallets to go around. I think this is a very well built set and I recommend it highly! [...]
