Croquet Lawn Maintenance

The autumn/winter croquet field

Croquet fields need a deep, thorough raking in the fall to remove debris, improve airflow, and eliminate the growth of moss. Repair and reseed worn and rutted areas as weather permits. Aerate with shallow to deep spiking to break up soil, improve drainage, and strengthen root systems by using a tyning machine or garden fork.

Worms are natural aerators, but their casts attract birds and become havens for weed growth. Croquet lawns are best treated for worms and other insects in October and November. Apply fungicides to halt fungal growth that suffocates healthy grass and strips soils of important nutrients; apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer. Evenly apply a light soil/sand mixture, working it between the blades to avoid smothering the grass. Weather permitting, the area should be seeded once autumn maintenance is completed. Winter maintenance requires routine mowing and brushings to break up water and avoid mossy patches.

The spring croquet field

In early March, use a mower with disengaged blades to roll the grass - rolling in several directions. Too much rolling too early in the season compacts soil, causes drainage problems, and cuts air circulation to root systems. Heavier rolling can be done in early April. Raking will remove winter debris, and brushing will control dew and surface moisture levels. Apply spring fertilizer, fungicides, and a pesticide/worm killer when weather is warm and ground moisture is substantial.

The summer croquet field

Additional applications of pesticides, fertilizers, and fungicides may be needed in summer. The serious croquet competitor will mow the field at least every other day and prior to a match. Except in very dry summer conditions, croquet lawns should be maintained at a blade height of 3/16 inches; never remove more than a third of the grass height in one mowing.

Dry croquet fields should be watered in morning and at night, when the sun is weak and less likely to cause burning.
